Commmon Errors while using Verbs

1. Incorrect:- One of my pencils were stolen.
Correct:- One of my pencils was stolen.

2. Incorrect:- Our only guide were the stars.
Correct:- Our only guide was the stars.

3. Incorrect:- The voice of the girls were beautiful.
Correct:- The voice of the girls were beautiful.

Note:- A verb must agree with its subject in number and person.

4. Incorrect:- If I was he, I would have helped us.
Correct:- If I were he, I would have helped us.

5. Incorrect:- Was he present, he would have helped us.
Correct:- Were he present, he would have helped us.

6. Incorrect:- God blesses you!
Correct:- God bless you!

Note:- In conditional and exclamatory sentences the verb may not agree in number or person with its subject.



7. Incorrect:- Two and two makes four.
Correct:- Two and two make four.

8. Incorrect:- He & I am friend.
Correct:- He & I are friend.

9. Incorrect:- Ignorance and idleness is the cause of many vices.
Correct:- Ignorance and idleness are the cause of many vices.

10. Incorrect:- Our guide and philosopher have left us.
Correct:- Our guide and philosopher has left us.

11. Incorrect:- The musician and poet have died.
Correct:- The musician and the poet has died.

Note:- Two or more nouns or pronouns forming a subject and joined by and require a plural verb. But if they refer to the same person or things, they require a singular verb. However they take a plural verb when they refer to two different person or things

12. Incorrect:- The musician and the poet has died.
Correct:- The musician and the poet have died.

13. Incorrect:- Man & woman are one flesh.
Correct:- Man & woman is one flesh.

14. Incorrect:- Rice & curry is his favorite food.
Correct:- Rice & curry is his favorite food.

15. Incorrect:- Bread and butter are ready.
Correct:- Bread and butter is ready.

Note:- if the two nouns are joined by ‘and’ denote a single object or idea or have the same sense the verb is singular.

16. Incorrect:- She as well as her friends were present.
Correct:- She as will as her friends was present. 17. Incorrect:- Deepak like his sister are good for nothing.
Correct:- Deepak like his sister are good for nothing.

18. Incorrect:- The leader besides his follows have been arrested.
Correct:- The leader besides his follows has been arrested.

Note:- A singular subject joined to other words by ‘as well as’ , ‘like’, ‘beside’ takes a singular verb.

19. Incorrect:- The number of students in our college have decreased.
Correct:- The number of students has migrated.

20. Incorrect:- A number of students has migrated.
Correct:- A number of students have migrated.

21. Incorrect:- The majority are against the congress.
Correct:- The majority is against the congress.

22. Incorrect:- The jury were unanimous in their decision.
Correct:- The jury were unanimous in its decision.

23. Incorrect:- The jury was divided in its opinions.
Correct:- The jury were divided in its opinions.

Note:- Collective noun take singular of plural verb depending upon the context.

24. Incorrect:- The union of the Soviet Sociation Republic have prospered.
Correct:- The union of the Soviet Sociation Republic has prospered.

25. Incorrect:- The Canterbury Tales are a collection of stories.
Correct:- The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories.

Note:- If one plural noun is a proper name for some collective unit or single object, it requires a singular verb.

26. Incorrect:- The brave never taste of death but once.
Correct:- The brave never taste of death but once.

27. Incorrect:- The rich hates the poor.
Correct:- The rich hate the poor.

28. Incorrect:- I treated him my friend.
Correct:- I treated him as my friend.

29. Incorrect:- Mahatma Gandhi is called as the Father of the Nation.
Correct:- Mahatma Gandhi is called the Father of the Nation.

30. Incorrect:- She thinks you as a fool.
Correct:- She thinks you a fool.
